Dress Code

Dress Code

Student dress should conform to our community’s standards of decency, safety, modesty and cleanliness. All staff members support students to ensure the dress code is followed and may remind students or contact a family to support them with appropriate school attire. Dress code can become an issue for students when the attire is revealing, contains inappropriate images or statements, and can make others feel uncomfortable or unsafe. We strive to ensure that bodies are covered, students are dressed for the weather, especially in winter when safety drills require extended periods outside, and so students can all feel safe, comfortable, and focused in the learning environment.

  • Please note: we discourage students from wearing clothing to school then changing into different clothing that does not meet dress code requirements.

Students must dress in ways that do not:

  • affect the safety of that student or other students
  • disrupt the learning environment
  • indicate affiliation with or admiration of negative social influences such as gangs, cults, substance abuse or sexual degradation or are inappropriate for all ages of students in our K-8 environment.
  • contain inappropriate, unkind, or implied disrespectful wording related to gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation.

The following should be observed for all students regardless of gender:

  • Sunglasses or hats are not worn inside the building. Hats work for medical and religious reasons can be permitted.
  • Hats cannot contain images or messages as listed above.
  • Shirts/jackets with hoods are okay- the hoods must be down in the building.
  • Pants must fit snug around the waist and not droop or a belt is required.
  • Pants should not come down to reveal the back side or underwear. Yoga pants must be worn with tops that cover the front/back just as shorts/skirts do.
  • Jeans/pants should not have large torn out sections or enough holes that leg above mid-thigh shows. See diagram above for expected coverage.
  • Shirts/sweatshirts should not have large tears in them unless there is another shirt underneath so as to assure coverage from armpit to armpit and from armpit to mid-thigh as depicted in the diagram above.
  • Skirts or shorts should extend to mid-thigh or lower in order to cover the entire buttocks both when seated and standing.
  • Shirts and tops must cover the midriff during all activities, including sitting, squatting, reaching and standing. Shirts must cover the chest and back from armpit to armpit and down to the waist on the front and back, and must be layered if sheer.
  • All underwear and underclothing must be covered (this includes bra straps and boxers).
  • Students must wear shoes appropriate for safe participation in all activities. Slides, slippers, and/or flip flops are not appropriate for school.
  • Clothing or jewelry that promotes weapons, drugs, alcohol or tobacco products and/or clothing bearing negative messages about self or others (Ex: “I’m with stupid.”) is prohibited.
  • Clothing or jewelry that inhibits safety, movement, or distracts from learning is prohibited.
  • Hair cannot be worn in a manner that obscures the ability to see one’s eyes, nose, and mouth.

Students who arrive in clothing that does not adhere to the dress code will be asked to change their clothes or will be sent to the office for something more appropriate. Borrowed clothing must be returned at the end of the day. A parent/guardian will be contacted by an administrator if the student continues to dress out of dress code. Students will not call home for appropriate clothes, as this removes students from instruction for too long.

Dress Code Guidance in Jeffco

Responsibility for student dress and appearance generally rests with individual students and their families. Students may wish to express themselves by the manner of their dress and appearance; however, students shall not wear clothing or affect an appearance at school or school-sanctioned activities or events that is disruptive to the educational environment. Jeffco Public Schools standards on student attire are intended to help students focus on schoolwork, reduce discipline problems, and improve school order and safety.

Disciplinary action for violating the student dress code shall include notifying the student of the violation and requiring that the dress or appearance be corrected before the student reenters the classroom, school environment, or school-sanctioned activity or event. At the discretion of the building-level administrator, a family conference may be held. More serious consequences may result from repeated or serious violations.
